Filmmakers ‘set’ to encase mate’s girlfriend’s car in 8 tonnes of jelly

A group of aspiring New Zealand filmmakers are proposing to encase one of their girlfriend’s cars in jelly.

“This is the Everest of jelly moulds – we’ll make it and film it - and although we can’t be sure we’re pretty confident Tom’s* girlfriend will let us use her car,” the group’s spokesperson Chris Dawson said.

The proposal to encase the car (a 1989 Honda Concerto) has already prompted heated debate online. Discussion groups formed to deliberate the amount of jelly needed, the level of cooling required, where to get sufficient gelatine and even the colour of the jelly.

“High estimates are eight tonnes of jelly – we’re hoping more like four, especially with the problems we could have cooling it. End of the day we’ll need a bit of Kiwi ingenuity - plus maybe an empty freezing works, a para pool and a crane,” Mr Dawson said.

The group will jelly the car to promote their short film The Breadmaker’s Wife (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGmDWuEfIDY ).

“Check out The Breadmaker’s Wife. We’ve already got well over 10,000 views and if we hit 50,000 we’ll attempt the impossible – we will put the Honda in jelly. They told Hillary it was unclimbable, but that didn’t stop him,” Mr Dawson said.

In 1997 the British Royal Army's Logistics Corp helped to make the biggest jelly at Blackpool Zoo. The jelly was a metre tall by seven wide and took 12 hours to set with a blast chiller. It is estimated that the amount of jelly needed to cover a Honda Concerto would likely surpass this existing record.

The group are to trial run their jellying techniques by setting their spokesman in jelly on the late afternoon of 27 May in Wellington. Attendance by media would be welcome and further details can be obtained by contacting the group (see below).

An artist’s impression of the car in jelly is attached to this press release for free use (high quality versions of this image are also available on request).
