Boobops Receives
Funds From Award Winning Student Volunteer
Boobops has received a $250 donation from the winner of the TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award.
Kayla Jones from Te Puke High School was named as winner of the Award, which recognises secondary school students’ service to the school and the community. The Award is jointly run by TrustPower and the Western Bay of Plenty District Council and was presented at the TrustPower Western Bay of Plenty Community Awards, held on Monday 28 June.
For winning the Award Kayla received a framed certificate and $500, with $250 going to Kayla personally and $250 being given to a community group or organisation of her choice.
Boopbops is
a Tauranga- based dragon boat team that aims to support and
empower people after suffering with cancer while increasing
fitness and good health.
“The money Kayla has donated
will go towards Boobops defending our dragon boat racing
title in Auckland next March. We have women who travel from
Waihi, Matamata, Katikati, Omokoroa and Te Puke for paddling
twice a week. To be able to keep travelling to regattas with
low costs and to compete with a full team, we fundraise hard
in the community so it’s lovely to get a special donation
like this. We may even use the funds to buy a raffle to make
the donation go even further,” says Boobops representative
Judith Butler.
TrustPower Community Relations Representative Suzi Luff says the TrustPower Youth Community Spirit Award has been a wonderful opportunity to publicly acknowledge the work young people do to enrich their community.
“Often young people receive a lot of negative attention and we forget the tremendous amount of unpaid work young people do which adds tremendously to the fabric of our community.”
“Kayla is involved in many school-based committees and this school term alone she has completed 28 hours of service to her school. Outside of school, Kayla is a youth leader at the Mount Mosaic Youth Group as well as fundraising for the Boobops dragon boat team,” says Miss Luff.
