Helping others can make you better off

Helping others can make you better off

Not many fundraising initiatives offer to help improve your health and your bank balance - while you help others, but the Auckland City Mission’s newest fundraiser the ‘7-Day Challenge’ does just that.

This win-win approach to helping others is based on the expert advice of New Zealand’s biggest selling food magazine, the Healthy Food Guide. The programme teaches skills to help you eat better while saving up to 22% off your average weekly food bill.

Healthy Food Guide’s experts have developed the programme which provides menu planers, shopping lists, recipes, hints and tips to eat better for less. It is nutritionally balanced, tasty and economical. The ‘challenge’ is to return what you save in just the first seven days to the Auckland City Mission so that they can help ensure that everyone in Auckland has enough to eat.

‘The beauty of the 7-Day Challenge,’ said City Missioner Diane Robertson ‘is that it teaches people practical skills that they can continue to use long-term. In this particular programme, we’ve provided just a seven day planner but it’s an introduction to simple skills that we can all use everyday. Healthy Food Guide’s information helps you to understand that you can actually save money while improving your diet.’

‘It’s also novel to be able to donate without it costing you anything,’ she continued. ‘Being asked to donate only what you save means there’s no additional burden on donors who are themselves facing increased winter costs. It really is a win-win situation.

I sincerely hope that Aucklanders take the 7-Day Challenge to heart,’ said Ms Robertson, ‘With just a little thought and effort, they’ll be amazed how much can be achieved in just seven days – for their own lives and for the rest of our community.’

How does the 7-Day Challenge work?
Step 1 – Go to www.aucklandcitymission.orgnz and follow the 7-Day Challenge link.
Step 2 - Download the menu planner and shopping list that's most appropriate for you.
Step 3 - Check the Healthy Food Guide site for the recipes, hints and tips.
Step 4 - Build your own online supporters page - for yourself or your team.
Step 5 - At the end of seven days, use the online payment system on your own page to return your savings to the Mission. Watch the counter grow!
