Fitness Community In Fight Against Prostate Cancer

North Shore Fitness Community Are In The Fight Against Prostate Cancer

Local CrossFit Affiliate - CrossFit Auckland participate in Fight Gone Bad 5 Fundraiser
Event Benefits Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand

When CrossFit Auckland participants step up for the 15-minute “Fight Gone Bad” workout on September 19th, they won’t be competing just for themselves. This community will also be raising funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand.

“While worldwide Fight Gone Bad events support a number of worthy causes, supporting the prostate cancer foundation is close to my heart because I lost my father to prostate cancer,” said Lisa O’Neill, Co-Founder and Director of CrossFit Auckland. “Not everyone will have experienced the impact of prostate cancer directly, but most people will certainly know someone who has, or know of families who’ve been affected by cancer in general.”

In the first four years of the annual Fight Gone Bad charity event, CrossFit Affiliates have raised more than $2 million. Fight Gone Bad is one of the most challenging workouts on the CrossFit menu, and the community at CrossFit Auckland will step up for the challenge.

The event will take place on Sunday, September 19 at CrossFit Auckland, Albany Highway, Albany and more than 500 CrossFit affiliates throughout the United States and around the world will host the same event. Last year, over 5,200 people participated, raising more than $1.1 million for the charities. In 2010 they seek to break the $2 million mark worldwide.

“Through their generosity and commitment, CrossFit Auckland members and friends are making the most of a great fundraising opportunity to provide much-needed support for men and their families fighting prostate cancer,” said Alex Porter. “The Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand are doing a great job educating the community about the importance of early detection, as well as the treatment options available to prostate cancer sufferers; and our members are doing their bit to fight for the cause.”

In this charity workout, participants will move through five exercise stations for one minute each. Upon completion of the “round” of exercises, they get a one-minute rest and go for two more rounds. Scoring is based on the number of repetitions the participants can complete in each minute (rowing = one point per calorie burned). The workout was given its name by World Ultimate Fighting Champion BJ Penn, who remarked after finishing, “That was just like a fight gone bad.” Participants will be squatting and throwing medicine balls, leaping onto high boxes, lifting and pressing heavy barbells and finishing with a sprint on the rower. CrossFit Auckland members and guests of all ages participate in this annual event with the youngest participant being 11 through to 60 years young!
