Black Ferns four times World Champions

Black Ferns four times World Champions

allblacks.com - (6/09/2010)

The Black Ferns have this morning secured their fourth successive IRB Women's Rugby World Cup beating England in a physical encounter 13-10 in a thrilling Final at Twickenham Stoop in England.

A phenomenal victory for the Black Ferns that saw them hold out a ferocious England attack after receiving three yellow cards during the game.

New Zealand scored the only first half try with Otago winger Carla Hohepa crossing over late into the half while the Black Ferns only had 14 players on the field. Otago second five-eighth Kelly Brazier converted Hohepa’s try and New Zealand went to the break leading 7-0.

England winger Charlotte Barras scored half-way through the second half, but two penalties from Brazier secured the victory for New Zealand.

New Zealand Rugby Union Chief Executive Steve Tew congratulated the team on their incredible achievement.

“The Black Ferns have an extraordinary record at this tournament and have definitely stamped their mark on world rugby, while also becoming one of New Zealand’s most successful sporting teams.

“We are all extremely proud of them and the efforts and sacrifices they have made to win this tournament and they showed such character and composure throughout the match, at one point playing with only 13 players, against what was a very strong England side,” he said.

Captain Melissa Ruscoe said: “After our game against them last year we had lost the physical battle and we knew we had to come out here today and front them if we were going to win it and our forward pack definitely did that, it’s just fantastic.”
