BOXING DAY FINISHES WITH A BOOM

A six year old paternal grandson of Zabeel powered home to steal the Group I, 200,000 Zabeel Classic off favored runners, Red Ruler and Ginga Dude, in the feature race at Ellerslie this afternoon.

Booming, ridden by replacement jockey and big race rider Vinny Colgan, stormed home to take out the Group I race, Colgan only picking up the ride after Opie Bosson was unable to fulfill his riding duties due to injury earlier in the day.

The other big winner on the day was North Shore beauty Meg Wilson, who won the Viva Supreme Award in the Viva Fashions in the Field competition. Wearing a spectacular green print 1960's vintage dress with matching accessories, including lucky peacock feathers in her hair, judges commented that Meg’s outfit was “understated elegance”.

Meg and the other category winners gain direct qualification into the regional finals of the Mercedes Prix de Fashion competition on Telecom Derby Day, Saturday 5 March 2011.

More than 20,000 people came out to enjoy the traditional Boxing Day celebrations at Ellerslie, which included a new look infield event, Beach Beats and BBQs.

The event featured a 2000sqm cricket oval for the "Unofficial New Zealand Beach Cricket Championship"; with the inaugural competition taken out by the Jive Turkeys, who turned up as the in-form team and gained extra points with matching superhero-inspired outfits.

As the sun set over the Ellerslie track, punters also enjoyed the acoustic sounds of James Reid from The Feelers, who headlined a stella line-up of musical entertainment on offer in the Infield.
