Big Day for Booming and Don Eduardo

Big Day for Booming and Don Eduardo

The feature race on Boxing Day at Ellerslie, the $200,000 Group 1 Zabeel Classic (2000m), saw the 2010 Auckland Cup runner up Booming take his first Group 1 victory in fine fashion.

One of two Jeff Lynds trained mounts in the Group 1 race, Booming (Don Eduardo x Beautiful Sea) and jockey Vinny Colgan emerged from the pack and flew the last 200 metres, going over the top of the leading pack, leaving the tough Australian campaigners Red Ruler and Ginga Dude in his wake.

Booming proved that he can race with the best when he ran a brave second to Zavite in the Group 1 Auckland Cup earlier this year.

Trainer Jeff Lynds has continued his stellar season, he has already notched up three Group 1 wins with Wall Street whose victories include the Group 1 Emirates Stakes in Melbourne. He also won last year's Group 1 Zabeel Classic with Vosne Romanee.

"He's a great horse (Booming), he has some potential," said the happy Jeff Lynds.

"We wanted to take him to Melbourne for the spring but he was weighted out of it, it has turned out to be a blessing and this is a great thrill to come here and win this.

"We will head to the Group 1 Auckland Cup now, and who knows, maybe even keep an eye out for the first Tuesday of November next year."

Booming was bred by Fayette Park Stud and was bought by Mr DR Frampton for $50,000 from Seaton Park in the 2006 Karaka Select Sale. Owned by D R Frampton & G K V Holdings Ltd, the son of Don Eduardo has raced 22 times for seven wins and seven placings and has earned connections over $420,000 in stakes.

It was the second stakes win of the day for sire Don Eduardo. The $45,000 Listed Newmarket Handicap (1200m) saw a very strong performance from the Donna, Dean Logan & Chris Gibbs trained Dashing Donna (Don Eduardo x Epic Pulse).

The six-year-old mare, much in the style of Booming, came out of the pack and flew the last 150 metres to win the listed 1200m event by a neck. Having just tested positive and in foal to the Group 1 winner Mastercraftsman, the black type win will dramatically increase her broodmare value.

Don Eduardo, himself a New Zealand Bloodstock graduate, still remains the highest priced yearling ever sold in the Southern Hemisphere at $3.6 million. Standing at Haunui Farm, General Manager Mark Chitty was elated with Booming and Dashing Donna's performances.

"It has been a long time coming for Don Eduardo, he has had four Group 1 placings and he has had more than his fair share of hard luck so for him to sire his first Group 1 winner, at weight for age in a very strong field, is fantastic.

"Along with Dashing Donna, he has had three stakes winners in two weeks with the Gai Waterhouse trained sprinter Swift Alliance also winning over 1200 metres, he is also Group 1 placed.

"He has a lot of promising young horses coming through and we are very excited to see these hit the track. It's great to see a son of Zabeel sire the winner of the Group 1 Zabeel Classic and we are looking forward to seeing him race later in the season."

Booming is the fifth individual Group 1 winner for New Zealand Bloodstock graduates this season. His sire Don Eduardo has a small draft of 13 yearlings in the 2011 National Yearling Sales Series at Karaka, follow the links to view his Karaka Select Sale draft and his Karaka Festival Sale draft.

A half-sister to Booming by Postponed will be offered in the 2011 Karaka Select Sale at Lot 710, and also a half-brother to Dashing Donna by leading New Zealand First Season Sire Perfectly Ready at Lot 828 will be offered in the same sale.

The New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sales Series will commence with the Premier Yearling Sale on 31 January & 1 February. The Karaka Select Sale will run from 2 - 4 February with the Karaka Festival Sale on 6 & 7 February.
