Late Lounge with Matiu "The Hook" Te Huki This Thurs 3 March 2011 | 7-9pm | KOHA

Our monthly Late Lounge sessions are popular with all ages. Join us on the first Thursday of every month for chilled out tunes in a relaxed setting. All galleries, cash bar, shop and cafe open until 9pm. Known for his amazing vocal power with Fat Freddys Drop, Rhombus and Tiki Taane, Matiu is at The Dowse with his own soulful roots music. He was the founding member of the popular roots band Homefire Burning and is currently still and member of basscamp and his current band My Golden Soul. Matiu's messages in his music are positive, uplifting, inspiring and motivating. The Dowse is hosting the first survey exhibition of one of New Zealand's leading digital artists, Sean Kerr. Auckland-based Kerr is delighted to be returning to Lower Hutt, where he grew up and attended Wainuiomata College in the 1980s. Yield: Making Fashion Without Making Waste opens 26 March
International designers unite for zero-waste fashion exhibition at The Dowse. The creations of fashion darlings Zandra Rhodes and Yeohlee Teng, plus many other leading international designers, are coming to New Zealand for a new exhibition that is then bound for New York. Richard Stratton: Aprés les Baleines (After the Whales) until 1 May 2011
Wellington ceramicist Richard Stratton has transported himself back in time, creating ornate and luxuriously glazed new works as if he was his ancestor, Francois Narbey, a 19th century whaler. Imagining his ancestor was equally skilled in the ceramic trade as he was in the techniques of early whaling, Stratton's pieces are in the style of English and European ornamental ware but with a contemporary twist.
Who Am I? Big Faces, Big Names: Portraits From The Dowse opens until 15 May 2011
Take a close look at portraits from The Dowse collection, including renowned New Zealand artists Rita Angus, Frances Hodgkins and Toss Woollaston. There are also contemporary works by Michael Smither and Paul Rayner's delightful ceramics bust of Carmen, Ken and Ken and Split Enz. This family show examines elements of portraiture, like pose, gaze, style and setting. Featuring hands-on activities, children will see how portraits can convey the personality of their subjects.

Light Stones until 27 March 2011
Shining a light on The Dowse glass collection, Light Stones features stunning works by ten New Zealand artists including Ann Robinson, John Edgar, Garry Nash, Lyndsay Patterson and Elizabeth McClure. Presenting a condensed history of the development of the glass movement in New Zealand, he stars of the glass world are highlighted. This beautiful little exhibition replaces Small Stories and demonstrates The Dowse's commitment to regularly displaying its collection items.
