Gore Artist Next Up At Fusion

Gore based artist and tutor Barbara Fraser is preparing to show off her latest works while in residence at Fusion Gallery and Studio in Lumsden this weekend March the 12th and 13th.

Barbara began her painting seriously in 1999. She is mostly self-taught, but attending workshops by Nancy Tichborne and Neil Driver for watercolours and acrylics respectively gave her the kick-start in both of these media. More recently Barbara has been working in acrylics, creating compositions from both flowers and landscapes. Her landscapes have included many rocky and dry landscapes, which reflect her love of Central Otago, where she spent her childhood. Her love of gardening and flowers has also been a focus in her artwork, and she has widely explored the form and beauty of roses, irises and peonies in both media. She enjoys working using strong colours in both media.

When asked about the programme at Fusion Fraser said “Artist-in-Residence programs offer the public a unique opportunity to see the variety of technical and creative processes of different artists in an informal setting, and they provide a valuable resource for budding art students”
“They also give the artist opportunities to ‘reveal’ the artist behind the artwork. Lumsden is very fortunate to have these opportunities on offer! “

Gallery co ordinator Michelle Wallis said “I’m so pleased that Barbara was able to accept our invitation to be at the gallery as an artist in Residence, she is going to bring something different to Fusion with her beautiful floral renderings and stunning watercolours”.

Barbara has recently taken part in both the Central Otago ‘Arts in the Garden’ and the West Otago ‘Designz in the Gardenz’. She has exhibited work throughout Southland and Otago. She works full-time as a teacher in the Arts and English fields, and has also been a Community Arts adult tutor for both Art and Creative Writing. She launched her website last year – www.barbarafraser.co.nz.

Barbara will be working on an acrylic painting during her weekend at the Fusion Gallery, and is happy to give tips and demonstrations to interested visitors. Fraser will be in studio Saturday 10 – 3 and Sunday 11 – 2.
