Kiwis Batucada Sound Machine To Play Sziget Festival

Travelling 17690 kilometers to join the likes of Amy Winehouse, Dizzee Rascal, Pulp and Manic Street Preachers is Auckland based group Batucada Sound Machine, who have been picked to play on the main stage at the renowned Sziget Festival in the coming European summer.

Hungary’s week long Sziget Festival attracts 390,000 partygoers annually and is one of Europe’s largest music festivals, rivaling Glastonbury.

Headliners for 2011 have just been announced and include some of the world’s biggest music acts. Only a few New Zealand bands have ever made the prestigious main-stage lineup in the 19 years the event has run.

The Sziget festival is just one stop in Batucada Sound Machine’s hectic six week tour through Europe in July and August. While Kiwi’s are snuggling down for winter Batucada Sound Machine will be performing at a number of festivals which include, among others, The City of London Festival, Larmer Tree, and Horizonte Festival in Germany.

The group will also perform for the second time at a secret, unnamable and invite only festival in the UK, whose guest list regularly includes the likes of Sting and Kate Middleton.

This is the third time the 10-piece group have embarked on a European tour, having previously wowed audiences with their Brazilian, Cuban and Afro-beat rhythms at Ollin Kan, WOMAD, Wereldfeest and Edinburgh Fringe festivals.

The band’s “cultural melting pot” of musical styles gives them a unique sound, which appeals to global audiences. The group offers something for every taste, with hip hop elements, a three-piece samba/reggae percussion line-up and an all-star horn section. They have earned a well-deserved reputation for getting crowds dancing, whether they are performing in Europe, Asia or Oceania.
