Auckland Festival of Photography kicks off Queens Birthday weekend

Photography lovers will be counting down to the opening of the Auckland Festival of Photography 2011, this Friday, 3 June.

This year's programme of exhibitions and events, which are happening throughout the region, are focussed on celebrating light and are all free to attend.

"Since the last Festival, we have seen some of New Zealand's darkest days including the Pike River Mine incident and the Christchurch earthquake. Photography is made possible by catching available light to create a lasting image - it is this light that we want to celebrate. We encourage everyone to get out around the Auckland region this Queens Birthday weekend and enjoy what's on offer", says Festival Director, Julia Durkin.

The Fringe programme has over 50 exhibitions and events happening all over the Auckland region, from the Kumeu Arts Centre in the west through to the New Zealand Steel Gallery in the south.

There is a wide range of shows on offer. Of particular note is the Gravity Festival Tuesday, being held on Tuesday, 7 June from 6pm to 9pm, which involves doing a circuit between nine separate exhibitions in a Gravity Festival car, located at each destination's pickup and drop off point - all for free.

Chris Brown, Marketing Manager for Gravity Coffee says, "This a fun night out, you get to see nine fabulous exhibitions, driven around on a circuit and this year we are offering a free coffee to the attendees at the Art Lounge hub. We hope many Aucklanders embrace this event as they have in other years and are looking forward to another successful evening."
