Auckland’s Off To See The Wizard!

Peach Theatre Company presents
THE WIZARD OF OZ
Saturday 10th – Sunday 18th September, The Civic, THE EDGE

It is one of the world’s most beloved stories - now, Auckland audiences young and old can experience the magic as The Wizard of Oz invites families to follow the yellow brick road in September!

A tale that needs no real introduction, Peach Theatre Company brings together a star-studded cast underneath the roof of Auckland’s The Civic as Dorothy, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man and The Cowardly Lion venture “off to see the Wizard”, with countless perils along the way… including the ghastly Wicked Witch of the West.

A timeless classic from page, stage to television and silver screen, The Wizard of Oz became synonymous with the Golden Age of Cinema; marking Judy Garland as America’s sweetheart. It also fashioned spin offs and reimagining’s of the tale – be it The Wiz, featuring Michael Jackson to Broadway musical Wicked, premiered in 2003.

With Jesse Peach at the helm of this monumental production, the young director has brought together an undeniably illustrious cast of performers from New Zealand’s broad rainbow of an entertainment scene.

Stepping into the ruby slippers and the role of Dorothy is future darling of theatre Olivia Tennet. The 20 year old has a wealth of theatrical credits to her name – an extensive history in performing in Shakespearean productions (including Peach Theatre Company’s production of Othello), younger audiences will no doubt recognize her from appearances in Shortland Street and The Almighty Johnsons.

Olivia shares the stage with no less than four distinguished veterans of New Zealand theatre; Raymond Hawthorne plays the great and powerful Wizard of Oz, the beloved Cowardly Lion is played by the equally beloved George Henare, OBE. The Wicked Witch of the West played by the wickedly talented Helen Medlyn and Tina Cross, ONZM plays one of two all-singing, all-dancing glamorous chorus queens.

With this great amount of talent involved so far, one cannot discount what other popular New Zealand performers Peach Theatre Company have yet to unveil before opening night! That includes the winner from “The Search for Toto” competition, announced on July 9th 2011.
