UNITED NATIONS RECOGNISES HOMEGROWN FILM CHALLENGE

New Zealand’s film challenge for young people 'The Outlook for Someday' has received international recognition from the United Nations as a project that helps to create a more sustainable future.

Now in its 5th year 'The Outlook for Someday' is calling for entries to the 2011 challenge a www.theoutlookforsomeday.net with an entry deadline of 30 September.

At the same time the film challenge has begun carrying the logo of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD).

This is only the second time that a New Zealand organisation or project has been allowed to carry the DESD logo by UNESCO, which is the UN agency with responsibility for leading the Decade.

“I was blown away when the endorsement came through from UNESCO Headquarters in Paris,” said David Jacobs, Director of Connected Media, the charitable trust which runs The Outlook for Someday.

“It’s great news for the film challenge and for what we’re working to promote. It really encourages us to add an international dimension to what we have grown here in New
Zealand.”

Connected Media’s objective for the film challenge is to help grow a generation of enterprising, digital-savvy young people who are focussing their creative energy and self-expression on the big issue of their time – sustainability.

“The Outlook for Someday embodies the spirit of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development which promotes the values, behaviour and lifestyles required for a sustainable future,” said Bryan Gould, Chair of the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO.

"We are proud to be partnering with the film challenge for a second year. It provides a great opportunity for young people to express themselves on a range of subjects from climate change to social justice. We believe it has the potential to become an international film challenge for young people around the world.”

The Outlook for Someday challenge is to make a short sustainability-related film. It can be any genre, filmed with any camera and any length up to 5 minutes. Anyone up to age 24 can enter, either individually or in a team.

Entrants are encouraged to interpret ‘sustainability’ in the way that makes sense to them. The focussing statement for the 2011 challenge asks them some questions:

“How are people part of the natural world?

Is social justice part of sustainability?

What part does creativity play?

Does it all connect?

MAKE A FILM, MAKE A DIFFERENCE”

The 20 Winning Films - selected by judges from media, education, government and business - will be broadcast by TVNZ 7 on both Freeview/TiVo (channel 7) and SKY/Telstra (channel 077).

“The Outlook for Someday is a wonderful project, now recognised by the UN,” says Philippa Mossman, Channel Manager for TVNZ 7. “It uses the power of broadcasting to explore urgent issues of sustainability from the perspective of young New Zealanders. We are proud to again commit to screening the winning films.”

“Our partnership with The Outlook for Someday is now in its 5th year and is a great example of TVNZ 7’s strategy to support the efforts of other organisations working to create value for the New Zealand public.”

Ten films will be chosen from among the winning films to receive Special Awards, including a Christchurch-focused award which Connected Media has decided to include in recognition of the challenges currently facing the city.

The ten Special Awards are:

Adobe Film-making Achievement Award

For a film with outstanding creative / technical quality

Connected Media Sustainable Christchurch Award

For a film focusing on sustainability in Christchurch

UNESCO Sustainable Future Award

For a film which promotes dialogue on sustainability through a new perspective and/or critical thinking

TEAR Fund Social Justice Award

For a film which addresses social justice as a sustainability issue

Department of Conservation Big Picture Award

For a film focusing on one or more of DOC's Big Ideas and Values - part of a national strategy to connect young people to the natural world

Ministry of Youth Development Youth Participation Award

For a film with strong participation by young people among themselves and/or at a community level

Te Puni Kōkiri Te Reo & Tikanga Māori Award

For a film making use of Te Reo and Tikanga Māori

International Year of Forests 2011 Forests for People Award

For a film focusing on what forests provide

Tearaway Secondary School Film-makers Award

For a film made by young people of secondary school age

Upstart Primary / Intermediate School Film-makers Award

For a film made by young people of primary or intermediate school age

The 20 Winning Films will be celebrated and the Special Awards will be announced at The Someday Awards red-carpet ceremony towards the end of the year.

The final award will then be decided by the public in a vote for The Body Shop Audience Favourite.

THE OUTLOOK FOR SOMEDAY AMBASSADORS:

Giving their support to the film challenge in 2011 are The Outlook for Someday Ambassadors: Amber Cureen, Wendy Douglas, Oliver Driver, Ruud ‘Bugman’ Kleinpaste, Kiel McNaughton, Kirsten Morrell, Te Radar, Lanita Ririnui-Ryan, Fraser St Clair Brown, Tainui Tukiwaho, Jared Turner, Liesha Ward Knox and Jennifer Ward-Lealand.

Liesha Ward Knox and Fraser St Clair Brown have filmed a promo for the film challenge which will be screening on TVNZ 7 from July.

THE OUTLOOK FOR SOMEDAY WORKSHOPS:

A series of free one-day workshops will focus on film-making, education for sustainability and youth participation.

The 8 workshops take place in July in South Auckland, North Shore, Central Auckland, Thames, Te Awamutu, Whangarei, Christchurch and Wellington.

Secondary students, primary/intermediate teachers and youth workers are encouraged to register their interest by emailing register@connectedmedia.org giving brief
information about themselves.
