Objective Art Awards Announced!

OBJECTive Art Awards

Winners of the fifth OBJECTive Art Awards, Auckland Council’s annual nationwide competition for object art, were announced on Friday 28th October at the Mangere Arts Centre – Ngā Tohu o Uenuku.

More than 80 works were entered into this year’s awards, from artists residing as far away as Bay of Islands to Dunedin. While only 33 artists were selected to exhibit their work, it was Raewyn Walsh who picked up this year’s biggest prize – the premier award and a $5,000 cash prize.

Kingsland native Walsh created her piece, Vessel 2011, with copper, paint, graphite and cast resin – with the small object winning over the judges.

Guest judge Deborah Crowe said that the first prize work was striking for its simplicity and confident in its execution. “This work stood out to the judging panel for its poise, deft manipulation of materials and sophisticated referencing of the past in a contemporary context” she explained.

Two more prizes were awarded on the night also; runner up was Kvetoslava Sekanova of Albany for her brooch created from newsprint, silver, paint and mixed media entitled The White Book. Third prize went to another Kingsland based artist Jasmine Watson and her Subsequence series of brooches made of sterling silver and champlevé enamel.

Ms. Crowe says that each of the awarded works displayed a consummate understanding of materials dovetailed with considered exploration and communication of ideas.

The exhibition of 33 selected artists from the OBJECTive Art Awards is open for public viewing until 2 December at the Mangere Arts Centre – Nga Tohu o Uenuku. All works in the exhibition are for sale.

The judges will also engage in a panel discussion on this year’s winning and selected works and other points of interest about the awards on November 19th at 2pm.
