2012 MEGA Pumpkin Growing Competition Weigh in 2pm 14 April

2012 MEGA Pumpkin Growing Competition Weigh in 2pm Saturday 14th April

This year’s Mega Pumpkin weigh in at the Mapua Tavern is on Saturday 14th April 2012. Weigh in starts at 2pm and ends at 4pm with the prize giving immediately afterwards.

We are pleased to announce Mitre 10 MEGA as our principal sponsor whose support enables us to bring a fun event to Mapua to once again raise funds for the Nelson Rescue Helicopter.

Last year a pumpkin of 497kg grown by John McKay won the MEGA Big-Boy category and was a NZ record, many people are trying to reach the 500kg mark this year and this is the 7th year the competition has been run.

“It is not just about the MEGA Big-Boy division though, it is a great opportunity for everyone to get involved, as there are many other categories including children’s sections, arty farty, ugly fugly and of course the average weight! So anyone with a pumpkin can come along and enter” said Martyn Barlow of Club Mapua.

“In previous years we have had pumpkins flown in by helicopter, there are some fantastic prizes and there is a prize draw for all entrants. We have entertainment from the ukulele band and a sausage sizzle on the day. Last years weigh in day raised over $1100 for the Nelson Rescue Helicopter.”

Registrations are open at the Mapua Tavern now and entry is only $5.
