Bach’s St Matthew Passion

Bach’s St Matthew Passion

Bach’s mighty St Matthew Passion is his longest and most elaborate work, composed for two choirs, two orchestras, children’s choir and a total of 13(!) vocal soloists.

This musical masterpiece of profound spirituality speaks to us of conscience, courage, compassion, acceptance, and hope. In this way, the music and message belong to people of all eras and faiths.

All our vocal soloists have performed widely in NZ and around the world.

David Hamilton, singing the most demanding role of evangelist, is sought after in this role all over the world.

Since winning the prestigious Mobil Song Quest in 2000, baritone Jared Holt has performed on many famous world stages including Covent Garden and the Glyndebourne Festival. He and his wife, Nicola Edgecombe, a specialist in Baroque music, have recently moved back to Auckland.

The role of Christ will be sung by Anthony Schneider, one of NZ’s most talented young singers, who won several aria competitions last year.

A special treat will be the two Bach Musica NZ choruses and orchestras performing in dialogue and as combined forces.

The concert will be conducted by German-born conductor Rita Paczian, who says: “I believe Bach’s St Matthew Passion shows such perfection of style and depth of compassion that the work stands right at the top of all human creations.”

1 April, 5pm, Town Hall
