Objectified
Objectified is a feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. In his second film, director Gary Hustwit (Helvetica) documents the creative processes of some of the world’s most influential product designers, and looks at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. What can we learn about who we are, and who we want to be, from the objects with which we surround ourselves? (75mins). More Information.

Exhibitions, Opening Thursday 19 April, 6pm

Adam Portraiture Award – A Touring Selection
Lopdell House Gallery is delighted to continue our association with the National Portrait Gallery in Wellington by presenting a selection of 45 paintings from the biennial Adam Portraiture Awards. More information.

Clay Bodvin – Hybrid Memories and the Still Life of Trivial Objects
Clay Bodvin’s multi layered graphic works are like kaleidoscopes – rich in colour, pattern, texture and illusion. Originally from Seattle, but now a Titirangi resident, Bodvin’s new series of works have taken an autobiographical turn. Utilising photography, illustration and animation and imagery from his childhood, Bodvin has merged fragments of other times and places to create intriguing memory pictures. More information.

Easter Holiday Programme 2012

Monday 16 April – Friday 20 April, 10am-2pm

Arts of Asia
Join us for an exciting week of arts activities inspired by different Asian countries. Each day we’ll be investigating special celebrations and festivals of Asia and creating unique works of art.

Monday — Japanese bowls
We will take a closer look at traditional arts of Japan including watercolours and ceramics. A series of pen and ink studies based on Japanese Zen gardens will be produced on ornate wallpapers and coloured with watercolours. The finished paintings will suspend from the wall with bamboo. Students will translate their best designs onto a fired ceramic bowl using traditional cobalt blue ceramic stains. These will be dipped into shiny clear glaze and refired ready to use.

Tuesday — Chinese dragon lanterns
This year, in Chinese astrology, it is the year of the Water Dragon. To acknowledge this we will be making special lanterns using coloured tissue paper, streamers and cane. These 3D sculptural lanterns will be illuminated with LED lights.

Wednesday — Elephant banners of Thailand
We will look at some examples of amazing silk fabrics from Thailand and come up with a design for a fabric wall-hanging featuring one of Thailand’s most sacred animals, the Asian Elephant. Children will use vibrant fabrics, paints, sequins, mirrors and coloured wools to make a very special fabric banner of this majestic creature.

Thursday — Mosaic mirrors of India
Today we will look at the colourful country of India. Children will create a set of handmade ceramic tiles inspired by the colours, wildlife, and flowers of India. These tiles will then be used to surround a wooden board that reflects the architecture of India. When the fired tiles are out of the kiln we will finish them with grout and set the mirror in place.

Friday — Treasures of Asia
Children will select their favourite Asian country to create mixed media assortment of artefacts and cultural icons. Using fired and air-dried clays, drawings, collage and plaster of Paris we will build up a unique collection of special Asian treasures, painted in gold and bronze to resemble ancient treasures. Children will have fun inventing special labels describing each treasure in terms of its origins, where it was found and how old it is.

Fee: $40 per child per day, family discounts are available. All materials and firings are included in the price. Please ensure your child wears suitable clothes and brings their own lunch.

Book: Online or by email: info@lopdell.org.nz

Opening hours : The gallery is open daily from 10am - 4.30pm, except Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day, Anzac Day morning and during exhibition installation. Admission is free thanks to the support of Auckland Council.
