Navigate to the stars for a Matariki Family Day celebration

Capital E and Carter Observatory are hosting a Matariki-themed family fun day complete with crafts, storytelling and star prizes!

Celebrate the Māori New Year under the stars on Sunday 17 June, in a special day just for families. Children can have their faces painted into a starry sky, enjoy a story from the entertaining duo Just Giraffe, and create navigation-themed crafts like a garden sundial or mini paper-waka for sailing the seven seas.

Then the whole family can sit back and relax under the night sky in Carter Observatory’s planetarium and enjoy a screening of Tycho to the Moon. Created just for families, the show follows Tycho travelling in his spaceship kennel to view the Earth and Sun from space, stopping to chase a golf ball on the Moon. This family favourite will play throughout the day on the full dome screen, followed by a live presentation on the stories within the stars of Matariki.

Last year's book of fabulous drawings by children will be on display, plus there’ll be a sausage sizzle for the hungry and starry spot prizes for the creative!

Stuart Grant, Capital E’s Director expects the event to be just as popular with families as last year, “We’re really pleased to be bringing families this unique event for the second year. Last year the event attracted over 700 people. Families loved learning more about Matariki and the night sky in a fun and interactive way – and what better place to do it than Carter!”
Bring the whole family together for a star-filled Sunday on the 17th June and join this unique and happy celebration.
