A Dream is a digital video artwork made in Auckland based on the greater works of Franz Kafka.

‘A Dream...’ is an attempt to explore the mental struggle of modern western man though several vignettes that confront the subconscious by putting a face to cultural guilt, a voice to societies chains & removing the masks from unwanted truths.

Production of A Dream... was made possible due to financial support from Creative Communities NZ & also due to the support of other immensely talented individuals who have lent their words of recommendation to director Shaun Garea & the work: Jane Campion (Oscar & Palm d’or winner), Richard Bell (video producer for videos from Nirvana, U2 &more) Billy Gould (Bassist from US group Faith No More & Koolarrow records CEO).

This work in many ways is an attempt at a modern Dante’s Inferno through the conduit of writers like Kafka, where Dante’s medieval poem pulled its structure & ‘rules’ from religion & poetry this modern inferno draws from philosophy & psychology. Hell is now the subconscious & the monsters, ghosts & demons therein are all now personal ones.

A Dream... is separated into several visual stanzas, each one independent of the other & each presenting a specific visual concept, each stanza will on exhibition of the whole be placed randomly next to others, a jigsaw narrative that creates its own story through the pieces that pre/proceed each other, like a dream the events & sequences will be able to mix & match in time & meaning.

‘A Dream...’ will constantly evolve & be unique for each new viewer. With no fixed beginning, middle or end the viewer is confronted with interpreting the themes from the pieces & order THEY saw thus hopefully providing an interesting, innovative & compelling exercise which will be an important step in individualising each experience.

The piece will be directed by NZ filmmaker Shaun Garea & will star experienced NZ lead Dwayne Cameron (The Tribe, The Cult, The Locals) with additional voice work by Stig Eldred (Dick Tracey, King Kong, CSI NY) among others. We will be also featuring some extensive VFX work using various compositing techniques & CG modelling right through to old fashioned prosthetics & appliances. Delirium FX & Tom K Burke are sharing the load respectively on the digital front while additional makeup & prosthetics are being created by Doghouse FX.

Music will be supplied by Koolarrow Records USA through its founders’ (Billy Gould of Faith No More) new experimental project: Talking Book. All music will be taken from their recently released self titled album.

With images that are both beautiful & horrifying, sound that floats then thunders & performances that are serene & explosive: A Dream... will be an aural & visual experience like no other.
