Music of Joy – world music comes to Kiwi shores
Music of Joy, a multicultural group of musicians from Australia, is bringing world music to Kiwi shores with their ‘Realise New Zealand’ tour during the weekend of Saturday 29 September and Sunday 30 September.
The international concert group is based in Sydney and features musicians from across the world. Their music features soulful pieces from India, Russia, Italy, Africa, Pakistan and England. Music of Joy’s repertoire mainly stems from spiritual songs but ranges across folklore and home-grown compositions as well.
“We believe that the purpose of music is to create and share joy. This is our first tour in New Zealand and we are looking forward to performing for the lovers of world music here,” they say.
Their ‘Realise New Zealand’ tour features four concerts spread across Auckland, North Shore, Hamilton and Tauranga. The concerts are free and open to all ages. The tour is being organised by Sahaja Yoga New Zealand, a non-profit meditation group that runs free classes to help people learn about the art of thoughtless awareness.
North Shore resident and one of the New Zealand organisers Maria Ross, whose daughter Karuna Kourkova is part of the touring musicians, says “We are really pleased to host Music of Joy in New Zealand and I’m personally thrilled that Karuna is bringing the talent back home.” Karuna is currently doing her Bachelor of Music in Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, as mezzo-soprano. Whanganui born Maori singer Merenia is also part of the touring musicians.
Music of Joy has performed at numerous festivals and special events across Australia, Italy, United States and India and most recently in Vietnam, China, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Malaysia.
