Great art on Waiheke at Labour Weekend

A national exhibition of art, a ceramics show and glass art will all be on show at Labour Weekend on Waiheke Island.

A kaleidoscope of colour is promised at one of the country’s most prestigious national art awards, the Walker & Hall Waiheke Art Award when it opens at Labour Weekend.

The winner receives the Walker & Hall $5000 premiere award and the judge also selects a work for the $1000 Zinnie Douglas Merit Award and the $500 Michael Evans Award sponsored by The Skin Institute for a figurative work. Last year’s Walker & Hall winner was split between two artists – Virginia Leonard and Frances Hansen.

Judge Mary-Louise Browne, arts advisor to Auckland Council, will announce the winner of the $5000 Walker & Hall Waiheke Art Award at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery on Saturday, 20 October at an evening function in conjunction with Kennedy Point Vineyard.

As well as the Walker & Hall Waiheke Art Award there will be two other exhibitions opening at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery during Labour Weekend. There will be a special opening for Waiheke ceramicist Penny Ericson and Wanganui glass artists Emma Camden and David Murray on Friday 19 October.

“We are delighted to have a combination of such great art on display and especially to once again host this national art award thanks to the generosity of Walker & Hall,” Waiheke Community Art Gallery director Linda Chalmers said.
