Nation’s Premier Ceramic Artists on Show

Nation’s Premier Ceramic Artists on Show

The country’s best ceramic artists will be recognised at a ceremony at ‘The Cloud’ in Auckland’s Viaduct on Friday 26 October.

The 2012 Portage Ceramic Awards attracted 237 entries from clay artists all over the country, which this years judge, multi-award winning UK ceramic artist, Dr Paul Scott said were largely of a very high quality.

“Narrowing down the entries to a small group of finalists was a daunting task. Each of the selected works combine a depth of artistic vision together with considerable technical skill.

“Many of the finalist works have layers of meaning and need time, rather than a passing glance, to be properly understood. They would stand their own in any international setting,” said Dr Scott.

The 38 finalist works vary in size from fingernail minute to multi-piece, metre-high installations and range in colour from porcelain white to eye-popping psychedelic.

The shortlisted artists compete for the coveted Premier Portage Ceramic Award which carries a prize of $15,000. Up to six merit awards will also be announced.

Tickets to the ceremony are available for purchase. Go to www.lopdell.org.nz for details.

The finalist works will be on exhibition at ‘The Cloud’ for one week only, from 27 October – 3 November 2012.

A People’s Choice Award will also be given this year. Entry forms for the public to vote for this Award are available at the exhibition.

Established in 2001, The Portage Ceramic Awards are New Zealand’s premier showcase for the ceramic arts. Administered by Lopdell House Gallery and funded by The Trust’s Charitable Foundation, the awards are the country’s best known barometer identifying our finest ceramic artists.

These annual awards and exhibition provide a vital platform to showcase the diversity of ceramic artists nationwide. The Portage Ceramic Awards are thrilled to be part of Art Week for the first time this year.
