Exhibition of treasures carried by the tides
Two of New
Zealand's most significant and distinctive visual artists,
Bronwynne Cornish and Christine Hellyar, have created an
installation incorporating local stories and found treasures
carried by the tides and washed ashore on Orewa Beach.
Movements for Tidal Voices, a new exhibition curated by Libby Brickell at Orewa's Estuary Arts Centre represents Cornish and Hellyar's first truly collaborative project.
Among the works in the exhibition, Cornish's sculpture, Lair of the Taniwha (2012), is inspired by a local legend about a ferocious Taniwha. In the same gallery space, Christine Hellyar's Combings (2012), features foreshore creatures made of found materials including lumps of crystalline ambergris and tendrils of seaweed.
Movements for Tidal Voices is part of Auckland Council's Archipelago exhibition series, an initiative that is enabling four emerging curators to introduce a wide range of outstanding visual artists to community-based galleries within the north Auckland area. The exhibitions are happening between July 2012 and February 2013.
With summer on its way, this exhibition is an imaginative reminder by Auckland Council to explore, enjoy and protect your local landscape.
