Introducing Access Community Radio
After IMNZ recently attended the ACAB conference, we thought we'd share with you a sector of radio that you may not be familiar with.

‘By’, ‘for’ and ‘about’ – those are three essential words in the world of community access broadcasting. ‘For’ and ‘about’ are objectives of all public broadcasters, but the word that sets access broadcasting apart is that little one: by – pardon the pun, but it’s our by-word. In community access broadcasting the people are at the centre of the process and there is no editor. Throughout New Zealand real people are making local radio that is vital, engaged, representative and unique, reflecting our many cultures and collectives as well as some of our most colourful individuals and interests.

Around New Zealand there are 12 community access stations are achieving great things with the communities they serve. Here's a list of them if you'd like to find something in your area that is of interest to you:

International and Industry Action
News in from award-winning songstress Anna van Riel, who has launched a special project on IndieGoGo:
"Next year in 2013 I'll be travelling with my husband and daughter Matilda, who will be 2 1/2 by then, to Canada and the States to perform a series of concerts in eco conscious and earth-built homes. This will be our first really big adventure for us as a family and will be fulfilling life-long dream of both mine and Locky's to do a road trip in the United States. I'm buzzing...So far throughout the creation of this tour I have aimed to contra-trade where ever possible. My film, for example, was created in exchange for produce from my garden (amongst other things), I am booking tours for other artists in exchange for production of my album and album cover. Following a win at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards for ‘Best Urban/Hip Hop Album’, Home Brew are taking their show on the Aussie roads again, announcing ‘The Bender’ tour before the year's end. Home Brew’s Tom Scott, Haz Beats and Lui Silk are set to play three dates throughout December in Melbourne (December 13), Sydney (December 14), and Gold Coast (December 15), with support from Young, Gifted and Broke songstress Esther Stephens. This being the their third Australian tour in less than a year, the boys are starting to make a name for themselves across the ditch and the hype is already building for what can only be described as three days of carnage. On the live front
Direct from its United States tour, Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 - Present opened at Auckland Art Gallery on 10 November and runs until March 3. The exhibition brings 173 works from more than 100 photographers and many rare and never-before-exhibited images. Photographers include Diane Arbus, Roberta Bayley, Henry Diltz, Godlis, Dennis Hopper, David LaChappelle, Annie Leibovitz, Linda McCartney and Albert Watson. Organised by the Brooklyn Museum and curated by photographic historian and author Gail Buckland, Who Shot Rock & Roll is the first museum exhibition to acknowledge photographers for their collaborative and creative role in the history of popular music. The exhibition will also be running a lively schedule of talks, 'rockumentary' film screenings, performances and more. Keep an eye on the gallery's What's On section for updates. The Open Lates are a series of late night events featuring DJs, talks, food, drink and live music. New release fanfare
While most bands just worry about noise control getting called to their practice space, spare a thought for Tom Lark whose routine practice space and studio was demolished in the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake. Suddenly, with nowhere to practice and record with his usual band, Lark found himself retreating to his bedroom. Rather than be discouraged by the setback, he instead discovered inspiration in the newfound restrictions and was soon penning new songs in a fresh voice and style. Armed with only this new set of songs, a defective laptop and whatever instruments he could lay his hands on, the Tom Lark EP was born. The resulting work marries ricocheting samples with folk guitar work, a plaintive voice and a deft sense of storytelling. What began as a bedroom project is now reaching a wide and appreciative audience. Initially released online through BandCamp.com, Tom Lark EP quickly picked up airplay on Christchurch's RDU radio station, placed in the top 50 songs for 2011 on Radio Active Wellington, peaked at #3 in the top songs in December 2011 and #2 track on bFM in Auckland. http://www.letthepeoplespeak.tv/artists/tomlark

It has been four years since Ariana Tikao’s last solo album, “Tuia” which received great praise at home and abroad. Tikao’s highly anticipated release “From Dust To Light”, is primarily inspired by the devastating earthquake in her hometown of Christhurch. “From Dust To Light” is more of a crossover album since “Tuia”, showcasing Tikao’s stylistic development and experimentation. Tikao alternates from English to Te Reo – in particular her native Kai Tahu dialect from the South island. Tikao has not been resting on her laurels since her previous album release. She touched the nation in February this year, performing “Whakaaria Mai” in her hometown for the Christchurch Earthquake Memorial in Hagley Park. Last year Ariana was a featured artist on the “Ihimaera” album, performing live at the Auckland Arts Festival, and November 2011 saw her touring the country with fellow Ngai Tahu musicians Mahina-ina Kaui and Christine White as “Voices of Our Ancestors”. In 2008 she released “Emeralds and Greenstone” with the cross-cultural multi-lingual band of the same name. The group completed a mini tour of the country earlier this year. With the assistance of Creative New Zealand, “From Dust to Light” was recorded at The Surgery, Wellington with Lee Prebble as engineer. The album is to be released on November 16th via DRM and Ode Records. Tikao will be performing songs from the new album at Dux Live, Christchurch on November 25th from 7pm. From themusic.com.au: A new report from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry [IFPI] is arguing that record labels around the world are the biggest investor in artists, and that the majority of unsigned artists are still looking to sign record deals. They also believe it an important factor to success.

The Investing In Music report from IFPI, who are notoriously staunch in their opposition of online piracy, claims that record companies invest $4.5 billion in A&R and marketing annually, with last year’s A&R spending at $2.7 billion – 16 percent of global music revenues. As such, the report argues that the music industry is a word leading industry in terms of research and development revenue. As part of the report the IFPI compiled a survey of unsigned artists in the UK that found 71 percent of unsigned acts are “aiming” to be signed by a label, with 75 saying that it was “important to an artist’s career”. The main reasons given were promotion support (76 percent), tour support (46 percent) and a financial advance (35 percent). These were backed up by a German report by Bundesverband MusikIndustrie, which garnered similar results. IFPI Chairmain Plácido Domingo argued that governments should take note of the report’s percieved findings.
