Wellington Track Cycling's Prestigious Laykold Cup Wide Open

Wellington Track Cycling's Prestigious Laykold Cup Wide Open

November 16, 2012

Wellington's premier track cycling event, the Laykold Cup Carnival, will take place on Sunday December 2 at the Wellington Velodrome in Hataitai and with the defending title race champion unable to attend, the title is up for grabs.

The prestigious 84-year-old cup was originally presented to the Petone Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club in 1928 for the winner of a five mile handicap race held at Petone Oval. In recent years the event has morphed into a 10km (30 laps of the Wellington Velodrome) scratch race run by the PNP Cycling Club with an afternoon of exciting supporting races. Previous winners include four-time Commonwealth Games medalist Graeme Miller and Olympic bronze medalist Gary Anderson.

Lee Evans, three time winner and 2012 champion, will not be racing, leaving the door wide open for a new title holder. Favourites include James Truebridge (Ngaio) and Denay Cottam from Wanganui, however with regular Sunday 'Speed League' racing helping local riders reach top form, there a plenty of others who have the ability to cause an upset such as Russell Fairbrass and under 19 riders Louis Higgison and Connor Johnson.

Wellington's women riders will be fighting it out for the Poneke Plate in a 20-lap scratch race while Masters compete for the Stayers Cup over 8km. Support for the Carnival comes from Mavic, Lemond Fitness and Burkes Cycles.

Reflecting the PNP's strong junior track cycling programme, there will be separate under 13, under 15 and under 17 omniums sponsored by Scotties Potties, where riders score points over four events for an overall prize.
