PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, January 9, 2013

‘The Hobbit’ named New Zealand’s Favourite Film of 2012

With Hollywood’s award season just around the corner, New Zealand’s inaugural People’s Choice Movie Awards winners have been announced and Peter Jackson’s Tolkien adaptation The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey chosen as the country’s favourite film of 2012.

The TelstraClear Flicks.co.nz People’s Choice Movie Awards saw over 80,000 votes cast by nearly 6,000 Kiwis throughout December. Last night the diverse winners in 17 categories were announced and the trophies presented.

Despite opening mid-way through the voting period, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey proved close to film-goers hearts with Peter Jackson also taking out Best Director.

Daniel Craig’s return to the big screen as 007 helped propel Skyfall to the winner’s podium as the year’s Best Action, while it was his co-star Javier Bardem that was awarded Best Actor for a scene-stealing performance as the film’s villain.

Best Actress honours went to Michelle Williams for her turn in My Week with Marilyn, and other individual performances were also singled out for recognition – Jennifer Lawrence winning Best Hero as Katniss in The
Hunger Games; Quvenzhané Wallis winning Breakthrough Performance for Beasts of the Southern Wild; and Tom Hiddleston receiving the dubious honour of Biggest Wanker as Loki in The Avengers.
