Love in more ways than one this
February
Fall in love from Friday 2 February
with Esther Hanson’s latest exhibition, Paper
Anniversary II – Romance, at Auckland Council’s
Franklin Art Centre.
Esther is a romantic. This, combined with her artistic vision, has resulted in an exhibition which not only showcases emerging and established artists dedicating their work to romance, but four weeks packed with events coaxing people to celebrate love. These include a speed-dating event and performances of acclaimed Talking Mute’s heart-warming musical, The Likes of a Loveless Dogwasher.
Esther has many talents - she is a printmaker, artist, art reviewer and educator. A local legend, her infectious love for art reaches those she teaches in her community. Paper Anniversary II – Paper Romance was conceived by Esther following a successful showing of the original exhibition Paper Anniversary last year.
Why love? Esther says the reason for calling the show Paper Anniversary II –Romance is that idea of freshness, promise and giving presents for the celebration at the first anniversary of a marriage, of which the traditional gift was that of paper.
“I had a vision for an on-going biennial works on paper show. This Paper Anniversary features works on paper in drawing, printing, painting, and photographic media as well as moving image, from artists from New Zealand, Australia, England and the United States.”
Around 30 artists will show their work in the New Zealand Steel Gallery in the Franklin Arts Centre and all will work around the theme of love. Popular returning artists include Kirsty Russell and Evelyn Kawiti.
Paper Anniversary II opens Saturday 2 February 2013 and includes a collection of affordable works on paper.
