Celebrate Waitangi Day out west with Sola Rosa and Tahuna Breaks

Henderson Park will be pumping to the feel-good sounds of Sola Rosa and Tahuna Breaks for Auckland Council’s free Music in Parks concert this Waitangi Day.

In addition to the headliners, 2012 APRA Silver Scroll Winner Lips (Stephanie Brown), who won the award with her single Everything to Me, will be playing support for the gig.

Sola Rosa has grown from a one-man producer, Andrew Spraggon, to a live collective of international repute. Successfully melding hip hop, reggae, jazz, latin, soul and funk, the group have never sat comfortably in one box. Flying high from the recent release of their latest album Low and Behold, High and Beyond Sola Rosa are an absolute must-hear.

Andrew Spraggon says they can’t wait to bring their eclectic live sound to Henderson Park.

“We’ve been touring the new album across the country and it’s great to be playing at home at one of Auckland’s longest running outdoor concert series.”

Seven-piece band Tahuna Breaks are well-known for being unafraid to mix genres and have honed their sound on stage, melding funk, disco, soul, live electronics and roots.

Marty Greentree, Tahuna Breaks lead singer, says it’s a pleasure to be playing Auckland Council’s Music in Parks gig.

“It will be our first gig of the year which will kick-start what’s going to be a pretty full on year for us. We’ve been rehearsing hard and we will be playing a few new tracks from our new album due out at the end of March.”

Mayor Len Brown says there’s a wealth of musical talent in the city, and it’s wonderful to be able to support some of Auckland’s most exciting musicians.

“The calibre of these Auckland-based musicians is world-class, it’s a pleasure to showcase their talents in one of our beautiful outdoor spaces.”

The series, in it’s 20th year, covers a wide range of musical genres including rock, country western, opera, hip hop, reggae and more. Enthusiasts can browse the Music in Parks site to see who’s playing when and listen to tracks from artists to get a feel for those they haven’t discovered.

Auckland Council’s Music in Parks 2013 programme features over 40 performances from January 2, 2012 – March 24, 2013.
