King Country Shearer Ready For Record Tally Bid

Te Kuiti shearer Stacey Te Huia has had some anxious moments today but is ready to go for his attack on one of the ultimate shearing records in which he hopes to shear more than 721 ewes in nine hours tomorrow (tuesday)..

Judges meeting in the Te Hape woolshed, about 12km east of Benneydale on State Highway 30, required three sample shears of 10 sheep each late this afternoon before being satisfied the sheep mustered for the record would meet an average wool weight of at least 3kg each.

As a result, at least 80 sheep which wouldn't have met the requirement were removed from the flock cullled gradually from 2500 last August to leave just 750 penned overnight in readiness for the 5am start.
The 33-year-old will be targeting a tally of around 160 in the first two-hour run to breakfast as he chases a record set also in the King Country by Southern Hawke's Bay shearer Rodney Sutton six years ago.
Should he get the record, by knock-off at 5pm, he will have hauled about 36 tonnes of wool onto the board during the day, filled 14-15 bales of wool, and will have taken on at least 14 litres of fluids in an intake as targeted as the number sheep.

Before turning in for the night, aiming to wake in time to get to the shed an hour before the start, he said he'd alternate between 400ml of water and 400ml of liquid supplements each quarter-hour.
