PRESS INFORMATION : FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

11TH MARCH 2013

“Pretty Brutal” - Roller Derby Documentary With Fighting Spirit

Announces World Premier At New Zealand Documentary Edge Festival

Pretty Brutal captures a microcosm of the world’s fastest growing female sport – the first production of its kind to delve into local Roller Derby at an intimate level, exploring surprising characters beyond the fishnets and mini-skirts.

We follow girl skaters, Pieces of Hate, Kid Vile and Naki Kronik into the full-contact world of the Pirate City Rollers. As these unexpected sportswomen embark on their debut competitive season, they are challenged to work together as sisters in a democratic community, then switch to fierce adversaries come game day!

Between slams to the concrete a bittersweet story emerges, about ambition, obsession and trying to connect. Pretty Brutal is a film for anyone who has gathered under a banner.

With little industry funding available for emerging documentarians, the making of Pretty Brutal reflects the fight and the DIY spirit of Roller Derby. Local producer/director, Monica De Alwis, learnt to shoot on skates, and drove the film making process assisted at times by a tiny crew of talented creatives.

Despite meagre resources, Pretty Brutal has achieved a place in this year’s 8th Documentary Edge Festival! A World Premiere Screening will take place at Auckland’s Q-Theatre on April 12th at 5.00pm followed by a screening on the 15th at 12.30pm. Wellington screenings take place on 10th May at 4:30pm, 13th May at 12:30pm (Reading Cinemas) followed by a final screening on 15th May at 7:00pm (Film Archive). Tickets range from $11.50 - $17.00 with discounts for groups. Auckland tickets on sale now at: www.qtheatre.co.nz/pretty-brutal-pouters

Reaching more screens here and abroad is the next leg of the journey for De Alwis. She encourages attendance at the Documentary Edge Festival, and, to assist in meeting the costs of additional screenings, she’ll look toward crowd funding. Very soon potential audiences can express their interest by pledging online ... watch this space!
