Telecom brings online South Auckland musical to life

The sound of music is being heard across Auckland as would-be stars audition for a new webisode series supported by Telecom.

The new online series, inspired by the successful musical ‘The Factory’, of the same name, is a creative endeavour between Jump Film & TV and producers the Kila Kokonut Krew (KKK). The show follows the trials and tribulations of a Pacific Island family as they navigate the daily challenges of living in a big city.

The musical is being bought to the life on the internet after several successful tours in a new interactive format made possible by Telecom and funding from NZ on Air through its Digital Media Fund.

Seven webisodes will appear online bi-weekly from June.

In the meantime, auditions are getting underway as the producers seek-out stars for singing, dancing and production roles. The first audition took place on Saturday at the Pacific Showcase at the Cloud at the weekend with others planned across Auckland. Online viewers get to vote on who they think has the talent to make it to the show over the coming months.

Telecom’s chief marketing officer, Jason Paris, says Telecom is excited to be supporting the initiative given the success of The Factory which has been performed at festivals around the globe.

“The online series is a great collaboration between talented people who are passionate about showcasing local talent and engaging the Pacific Island community through transmedia. Telecom knows from engagement with our customers that staying connected with family, be-it through calling, texting or Skyping, is really important within the Pacific Island community who are also high users of online data. The growing emergence of online series just indicates how interest there is in this new form of entertainment and Telecom is excited to be able to support The Factory and in turn New Zealand’s data future.”

Telecom’s partnership involves promotion of the audition process through social media channels as well as on site support with a colourfully-branded bus decked out with laptops for online auditions.

To make the most of what’s going on inside the bus, Telecom will screen live external feeds of the action on a large screen and provide bean bags, popcorn and free non-alcoholic drinks to supporters and would-be stars while they wait for their friends and family to prove their worth online.

The KKK will also put together the ‘best’ and ‘worst’ auditions for ‘Telecom Takes’ which will be showcased in bit sized clips through social media.

Telecom will also be seeking out those that fall below the singing and dancing requirements for The Factory, but who have demonstrated other talents. These alternate stars will be identified during the auditions with the chance for a relevant reward from Telecom.

The auditions will take place at around Auckland over the coming month including:

• Polyfest, 13-16TH March
• Sylvia Park 17th March
• Mangere Market 23rd March
• Manukau City 24th March
• Otara Market, 30th March
