Stewart Shines At Amberley

Rangiora’s Susie Stewart has put her hand up as the one to watch going into the business end of the season after a dominant win in the Open Intermediate at Eventing Canterbury’s One Day Horse Trial at Amberley today (Sunday).

Stewart and the-catching, ultra-consistent, Cowboy moved up from sixth after dressage to take the lead with faultless jumping, adding just 0.8 of a time penalty on the cross country to her dressage score of 43.2. Invercargill young rider Jade McRae made the long trip north worthwhile finishing second with Kabo Hallucination on 52.7, but disappointingly was forced to retire Il Mafioso after a fall early on the cross country. Dressage leader Emily Cammock (West Melton) finished third with Lewis after racking up 18 time penalties on the cross country.

Local rider Nicole Chapman (Amberley) came through to take the honours aboard Stars Ransom in the strong Open Novice. Fourth after dressage, Chapman added just 4 show jumping penalties to an otherwise perfect score sheet to finish on 42.5, just ahead of Sophie Wigley on former National One Day Champion SE Big, second on 44. Reefton’s Eve Hawes finished third with Y-Puna Trolley Dolly, just ahead of Cammock’s trio Beaumont Boy, Al For Short and Cool Chatool, fourth to sixth respectively.

Twenty-six started in the Prydes Easi Feed Pre Novice which was taken out by Lucy Walker (Sumner) on Bamboozle with a clean sheet ahead of Brent Jury (Rangiora) on SE Godswalk, and Hokitika’s Todd Magner on Marsden Magic. Two show jumping rails proved costly for dressage leader Kirsten Beaven (West Melton) and RV Dreamcatcher, dropping her to fifth overall.

The two training divisions, sponsored by Saddlery Barn and Charton International respectively, went to Stephanie Matthews (West Melton) on Croftlea Rock & Roll and Sophie Ware (Ladbrooks) on Summer Ale.

Meanwhile, honours in the Warrens Equine Pre Training A went to Caitlin Adams (Christchurch) on Ohoka St Elmo, with the Bayer Pre Training B to Nick Pyke (Broadfields) on Staples. Both classes were dominated by heavy cross country casualties.

Next, all eyes will be on the FEI South Island Three Day Event at the National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island from April 18-21.
