Kupe Sites – The Landmark Series
Voyager New Zealand’s current major exhibition in the Edmiston Gallery is Kupe Sites. Kupe is regarded by many IWI as the ancestor who discovered this country. Kupe Sites is a touring photographic exhibition from the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa. It explores the stories of Kupe’s encounter with New Zealand through names of various landmarks and places and even the name Aotearoa.
In response to this exhibition, which is to run till mid November, Voyager is conducting a series of themed activities and workshops named ‘Landmark Series: NGA TAUNGA WAKA’. From April to June the focus is on photography and the featured speakers are
Sunday, 7 April – Throught the Lens with Chris Cameron, Photographer for Emirates Team NZ. Meet the photographer behind the team and learn about the Landmark events he has captured.
Sunday, 28 April – A Pinhole Photography Workshop. Try your hand at Pinhole Photography as we celebrate World Pinhole Day.
Sunday, 19 May – Through the Lens with Colin Gans, Underwater and Aerial and Photographer. Discover the challenges of Photography above and below the water.
Thursday, 6 June – Through the Lens with Michael Hall – Kupe Sites photographer. Join us behind the scenes and learn about the development of this exceptional exhibition.
Sunday, 9 June – Kids and Cameras. Make it ‘click’ at Voyager or ‘take a snap’. Enjoy a variety of photographic activities for kids.
Sunday, 30 June – Through the Lens with acclaimed Documentary and Film Maker, Peter Young. Join this leading exponent of his genre to discuss his work including “Coasters” and “The Last Ocean”.
Voyager is also running a photographic competition alongside Kupe Sites – Landmarks of People and the Sea. Submit a photo of a Maritime Landmark that is significant to you. This could be a physical landmark or a landmark in time. Think about landmarks that have affected you within history, culture, innovation or environment.
