Top soprano Brueggergosman steps in

Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra regrets that a back injury has left Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet unable to appear in the New Zealand Herald Premier Series concert Last Songs.

The APO wishes Ms Charbonnet the very best for a speedy recovery.

We are, however, delighted to announce that the outstanding Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman will appear at the 2 May concert in Ms Charbonnet’s stead.

Acclaimed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “a singer of rare gifts and artistic intensity,” Measha Brueggergosman is famed for her onstage charisma and the beauty of her voice. The concert’s repertoire remains unchanged, and Ms Brueggergosman will sing Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs with the APO. They are pieces she knows well, having recently toured them through Europe with the WDR Symphonieorchester and Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Another highlight of Ms Brueggergosman’s 2012-13 season was her Berlin Philharmonic debut in Porgy and Bess with Sir Simon Rattle.

Ms Brueggergosman has appeared with many of the world’s leading conductors and orchestras – she was the featured soloist in Gustavo Dudamel’s first concert as LA Philharmonic Music Director – but her profile transcends the concert hall and opera house. In 2010 3.2 billion people saw her sing for the opening of the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

“No orchestra likes losing a musician to sickness and we send Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet our best wishes,” says Barbara Glaser, Chief Executive of Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. “To secure an artist of Measha Brueggergosman’s stature at such short notice is testament to the APO’s international standing. Measha is one of the most commanding sopranos of her age and I know that her APO debut will be very special.”
