MOVING STATIONERY

Work minus productivity

Created and performed by Thomas Monckton

From Helsinki, to New York, and now back home – New Zealander Thom Monckton returns to Wellington for a short season of his multi award-winning family friendly show Moving Stationery as part of the NZ Comedy Festival.

Moving Stationery is a wordless one-man physical comedy show combining dance, object manipulation and clown technique. This comedy of errors revolves around Sigmund, the bewildered recipient of a new office job, who is completely out of his depth. Sigmund’s desperate attempts to defend himself against his own mistakes spiral out of control until he is fighting an epic war against a (deceptively) harmless office. The elevator, his lunch, and the office stationery seem set to destroy him.

The show was first introduced to kiwi audiences in 2012 with a sell-out season at the New Zealand Fringe Festival. There it garnered huge praise, winning three prizes – Best Theatre, Stand Out Performer and the ultimate Best Of Fringe award. His performance also won him Actor of the Year at the Chapman Tripp Theatre awards. Monckton says, “I was totally surprised by the Chapman Tripp award nomination and stoked to win it. I'm really happy to be recognized in the theatre community after sidling in from circus. I think physical and skills based theatre is the most progressive genre of theatre performance around the world at the moment and the fact that the Wellington theatre community is inclusive of it is a positive sign”.

Moving Stationery has since performed in festivals all over the world, including at the New York Clown Festival, as well as travelling to the Dunedin and Auckland Fringe Festivals, and Christchurch’s World Buskers Festival. The show has had wide appeal with audiences young and old. It is an easy and entertaining show to see, combining the very old and very new forms of clown – both rarely seen in New Zealand. Moving Stationery is an energetic, wordless, absurd comedy that will hit you like an overdose of wasabi.

Moving Stationery will be performed at Downstage Theatre at 7pm on 10-11 May 2013, with a special matinee performance at 5pm on Saturday 11th where adults can go for the children’s price of $14.90. Tickets available from Ticketek.
