Fantasy, Faery, and Fun Ahead at The Roxy Cinema

Fantasy, Faery, and Fun Ahead at The Roxy Cinema

The school holidays are sorted at The Roxy with The Gloaming Trilogy exhibition on show in The Grand Lobby, a series of amazing children’s films on screen at The Roxy Cinema, and delicious children’s meals at Coco at The Roxy.

The Gloaming Trilogy exhibition features sculptures from Johnny Fraser-Allen’s incredible children’s fantasy series. Dozens of the trilogy’s characters are on display including the amazing five-foot high Dwarven troubadour.

“The Roxy is excited to have The Gloaming Trilogy exhibition and to offer Wellingtonians a rare opportunity to see these amazing pieces of art. The only other way to see some of these sculptures up close and personal is to travel to Australia or the United States to the Supernova and Comic-Con expos,” says Tania Rodger, co-owner of The Roxy (and one of Johnny’s mentors).

“With The Gloaming Trilogy, Johnny has combined the arts of sculpture, film, and literature. He has created another world based on fantasy, magic, and lore that children (and adults) will love. Johnny is an incredible artist, and has spent years honing his craft at Weta Workshop as one of its senior sculptor and conceptual designers, and has dedicated the past two years to seeing The Gloaming Trilogy to fruition. It is an exhibition that is not to be missed.”

For budding marine biologists, the fun continues on the big screen with the film The Whale, the true story of an orca whale that befriended humans on the coast of British Columbia, Canada. Nicknamed the “‘Mogli of the jungle’ of whales”, the movie is narrated by film star Ryan Reynolds (who also executive produced the film).

The Roxy Cinema is also screening The Croods, Oz: The Great and Powerful, and for young adults, Oblivion, Jack the Giant Slayer, and the eagerly awaited Iron Man 3. Children’s tickets cost just $10 for 2D films and $14.50 for 3D films.

As always Coco at the Roxy has a delicious (and affordable) menu range for children, and adults alike, including healthy homemade options using free range and fresh ingredients. Events Manager Caroline Arapoff says many of the The Roxy’s owners and managers are parents and know what it takes to keep children occupied and entertained during the school holidays.

“With wet weather forecast over the coming weeks, The Roxy offers children, and their parents, some respite from cabin fever with an amazing exhibition, great movies, and fantastic food. Coco at the Roxy even has colouring books and crayons to keep younger children entertained while you dine. The Roxy is the place to be these school holidays,” she says.
