Caritas songwriting contest winners announced

Catholic social justice agency Caritas has added its contribution to New Zealand Music Month by announcing two winners from opposite ends of the country for its annual Singout4Justice songwriting contest.

Lucy Wilkins, a Year 10 student from Kavanagh College in Dunedin, won the Years 7-10 section with One Human Family, while Elena Šiljić, in Year 13 at Carmel College in Auckland, won the Years 11-13 section composing Land of the Lord. Now in its fourth year, the competition was opened up to senior students for the first time.

Both winners were writing on the Caritas theme for 2013 ‘One Human Family’. Each of them receives a $400 music voucher and a $100 voucher for a ‘Caritas Gift’ of their choice. Elena Šiljić will be presented with her prize and certificate at a Carmel College assembly on 29 May, while Lucy will receive hers at Kavanagh College on 13 June.

Finals judge Don McGlashan chose the two winners from among eight shortlisted from 23 entries across the two age groups. The winning songs and previous years’ winners can all be heard at http://www.caritas.org.nz/schools/singout4justice. Other commended songs are also listed on the website.

Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand is a member of Caritas Internationalis, a confederation of 165 Catholic aid, development and social justice agencies active in over 200 countries and territories.
