Music

Elemental - Strike Percussion
Fire, water and flashy backflips feature in Strike Percussion’s acclaimed work Elemental which has its first Auckland performances in May. Elemental fuses driving beats with dramatic choreography and staging, using both commonplace and unconventional percussion instruments. Some of the more unorthodox instruments played include hydrophones (microphones detecting underwater sound waves), pyrophones (instruments where fire is shot through pyrex piping), dippophones (instruments where metal plates are dipped in and out of water) and classic Bedford truck panels.

Sydney Bridge Upside Down
Taki Rua Productions’ adaptation of David Ballantyne’s novel Sydney Bridge Upside Down has its stage premiere in June with seasons in New Plymouth, Gisborne, Wellington and Auckland. Part sinister love-story, part darkly comic coming-of-age fable, Sydney Bridge Upside Down takes place during one summer in a tiny New Zealand settlement, Calliope Bay – a place “on the edge of the world”. The story follows teenager Harry Baird through a fateful summer. Told through Harry’s eyes, the events of the story unfold at an abandoned meat-works – a forbidden and dangerous place; a place where Harry Baird finds himself drawn, a place where accidents happen. A place where people die...

Classical Music
Einstein’s Universe
Albert Einstein was not only the greatest physicist of the 20th century – he was also a keen musician. He carried his violin, “Lina”, with him everywhere he went; he would refresh his mind with constant musical breaks during his work, and particularly adored chamber music, taking part in the regular Princeton musical evenings and playing with many of the most famous musicians of his day. UK violinist Jack Liebeck, “Young British Performer of the Year” and founder of The Fibonacci Sequence, has a strong interest in science himself and has carried the Einstein’s Universe programmes with Professor Brian Foster worldwide. In the wake of the recent discoveries in particle physics, he teams up with chamber music friends in New Zealand – pianist Stephen De Pledge and Andrew and Julia Joyce, principals of the NZSO – for a special double programme of illustrated talks and the music that Einstein played and loved. www.chambermusic.co.nz
