Tickets to California on sale now - visit California Design this winter

Experience California living this winter and get your advance tickets to Auckland Art Gallery’s latest international exhibition, California Design, 1930–1965: Living in a Modern Way opening on 6 July.

Early bird tickets give visitors priority access and are available now from eventfinda.co.nz at a discounted rate of $12 until 5 July.

Original furniture by Charles and Ray Eames, the world’s first Barbie doll and graphics by legendary designer Saul Bass are just some of the highlights in this wide-ranging exhibition.  The exhibition is the first ever extensive survey of modern California design in New Zealand and demonstrates the impact that California’s artists, craftspeople and designers had on the products, furnishings and houses of mid-twentieth-century America.

Auckland Art Gallery Senior Curator Ron Brownson says, ‘The exhibition touches every aspect of Californian living, from the clothing and jewellery people wore to the homes they lived in, the furniture they used and the advertising and art which surrounded them.

‘California Design is a must-see for everyone with a fascination for design and an interest in modern living as it explores the most influential period of the 20th century.’

Visitors will be able to further their experience of California’s design heyday through an exciting programme of Open Late evenings, architectural tours, film screenings, talks, workshops and more. Open Late evenings will be held on 23 July, 20 August and 10 September from 6-9pm – more detail on these exciting events to come.

California Design features more than 250 objects, including furniture, textiles, fashion, graphics, industrial design, ceramics, jewellery, metalwork, architectural drawings and film.   The exhibition was organised by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. 

Supporting the exhibition in its tour to Auckland are local event partners Mercedes-Benz NZ, AUT University and Bauer Media Group’s HOME magazine. 

Adult single tickets are $15 (concessions available). Early bird tickets can be bought for $12 via Eventfinda (eventfinda.co.nz) from now until 5 July.

California Design, 1930–1965: Living in a Modern Way runs from 6 July to 29 September 2013.
