New book showcases New Zealand contemporary art

New book showcases New Zealand contemporary art

The work of New Zealand’s top emerging artists from Elam School of Fine Arts at The University of Auckland has been published in a new book. The images and text contained in this catalogue are a sample of the work that was displayed during the November 2012 Elam Graduate Show and they reveal the way in which Elam School of Fine Arts is working at the leading edge of visual arts education in Aotearoa.

Elam Graduate Work gives a glimpse into the future of arts practice. This is the sixth edition in the series representing the final submissions of graduating students and is a must for anyone interested in new work by young contemporary artists.

The beautifully designed publication is a collector’s item that presents a refreshing look at the diverse form employed by graduates from Elam School of Fine Arts - and it documents the early work of those who will be some of the most innovative artists in New Zealand.

“The art works in this catalogue offer a small window into Elam activities and the speculative and personal engagements within each artist’s practice. Examples of student writing have also been interwoven between the images and this pairing of text and visual material demonstrates how art production is not an isolated activity, but one of dialogue, rigour and exchange across a broad framework of aesthetic and imaginative responses to the world” says says Associate Professor Derrick Cherrie, Head of Elam.

This publication is available from suppliers of fine art books nationwide or through Elam School of Fine Arts for $27.95.

The University of Auckland’s National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries comprises the School of Architecture and Planning, Elam School of Fine Arts, the Centre for Art Studies (CAS), the School of Music and the Dance Studies Programme.
