Keep safe and be aware of the snow conditions

Media statement from NZSki

June 20 2013

As snow packs continue to deepen across New Zealand, NZSki Ltd is urging keen skiers and snowboarders to ‘keep safe’ and be aware of the snow conditions around them.

NZSki CEO James Coddington said ongoing heavy snowfalls meant it was “timely” to remind those considering going ‘out back’ or outside the ski area boundary to keep safe and be aware of dangers.

“There’s a huge difference between a ski area that is patrolled and managed as opposed to backcountry areas where things can really go seriously wrong and there’s no-one there to help you,” he said.

The Remarkables Ski Area Manager Ross Lawrence said The Remarkables was seeing “heavy snow loadings combined with high winds”.

“Our priorities include making safe all avalanche-prone areas within the ski area boundary and on our access road,” he said.

“There’s a huge amount of hype out there about amazing snow conditions but we want everyone to please be aware of taking their own personal safety very seriously.

“Everyone up here at The Remarkables is excited about Saturday’s opening day (June 22).

“It’s going to be one to remember but we urge everyone to respect any closures in place because they’re there for your own personal safety.”
