Dave Dobbyn and Don McGlashan Together In Concert

The Classic Hits Acoustic Church Tour, 2013

Dave Dobbyn and Don McGlashan Together In Concert

The 2013 Classic Hits Acoustic Church Tour presents two of New Zealand’s most beloved songwriters and artists, Dave Dobbyn and Don McGlashan, together for the first time in a concert collaboration like no other.

Dobbyn and McGlashan are held in the very highest regard in New Zealand music as both solo acts and as members of favourite bands The Mutton Birds, Th’ Dudes, Blam Blam Blam and DD Smash, they are the authors of scores of iconic Kiwi hits including Anchor Me, Dominion Road, White Valiant (Don / The Mutton Birds) and Loyal, Slice of Heaven, Welcome Home (Dave). Together they form a pairing that will be even greater than the sum of its parts and a fitting way to mark the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the first Acoustic Church tour.

The duo will take time off from their respective projects for this tour of New Zealand. Don has been busy working on his third solo album, while Dave has recently invited over 20 guests to take part in his Stories Old and New tour. Classic Hits Acoustic Church Tour audiences can expect to hear classic tracks from both artists as well as some new original tracks, but all with a twist: all songs will have been re-arranged to suit the acoustics of the beautiful churches and cathedrals that make up the tour.

2013 is the sixth year of The Classic Hits Acoustic Tour and it will provide a series of seven exclusive shows, beginning in Hamilton and continuing on through Tauranga, Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Dave Dobbyn, who headlined the 2010 tour, is excited to be returning to some of New Zealand’s most spectacular churches where he will perform in an environment that holds emotional significance for him.

“Church was where I first discovered my love of music. It’s great to be taking it back to where the journey began for me,” says Dave.

Don says: “I played on The Winery Tour last year with some of my old mates from The Mutton Birds, which was a wonderful experience, but I’m relishing the chance to play alongside Dave in these intimate environments”.

Civic Events co-promoter Brent Eccles is delighted to have two such talented musicians involved and says that the 2013 tour is set to be among the most anticipated.

"This year’s Classic Hits Acoustic Church tour will certainly be something special. We’re expecting a huge turnout from New Zealanders from all four corners of the country".

HISTORY

In 2004, Civic Events produced a national acoustic church tour for Bic Runga around New Zealand, the idea springing from a show Bic had played in the Union Chapel in London in 2003. We have some amazing churches in New Zealand, beautiful places built for singing, soloists or choirs of voices. In that environment, perhaps accompanied only by piano or organ, acoustic guitars and percussion, every note is crystal clear, at the front and all the way at the back; the sound is pure and magnificent. The tour was a huge success - the music, the sound, the leadlight and the bar heaters. It was a unique and special tour event. From the germ of an idea in a serene chapel on a cold London night, through the national sell out success of the first Church Tour in 2004, came the second annual Classic Hits Acoustic Church Tour.

2009 Tour- nine shows nationwide

In 2009 the tour featured a very special pairing of two of New Zealand's greatest songwriting and performing talents - Greg Johnson and Boh Runga. The shows saw both of them on stage together for their whole set, performing their own and each other's songs - together. Joining them we had Zed front man and solo hit-maker, Nathan King and we introduced you to a bright new talent in young Auckland singer/songwriter Lydia Cole. It was a magical event, as those who attended the shows will attest.

2010 Tour – 12 shows nationwide

Dave Dobbyn headlined the 2010 tour. Dave needed little introduction to our audience. He is a songwriter/singer and guitarist of extraordinary talents and in the magnificent Church environment his voice shone bigger and brighter than ever before. Dave performed with percussionist Ross Burge and at times, members of Christchurch band Dukes who were also the opening act.

2011 – 17 shows nationwide

2011 saw Bic Runga return to the Tour and the music scene after a five year break from music to be a full time Mum. One of the very best songwriters this country has ever produced, along with a voice from heaven, she once again made the Church Tour her own. Backed by former Mint Chicks Kody Nielson and Michael Logie.

2012 – 14 shows nationwide

2012 Classic Hits Acoustic Church Tour presented an exciting collaboration of three of New Zealand’s most talented and versatile female singer/songwriters: Anika Moa, Boh Runga & Hollie Smith: Together in Concert for the first time ever.
