Students respond to Warhol: Immortal

An event celebrating Andy Warhol’s famous studio, The Factory, is set to transform Te Papa into a social playground next Wednesday night (31 July 2013).

More than 300 people are expected to attend POP, an experiential night being put on by students working with Te Papa and Massey University’s in-house design studio, Open Lab.

Te Papa spokesperson Suzanne Knight says it’s been an energising experience working with such enthusiastic and creative young talent.

“It’s a great example of the dynamic approach we are taking to interact and involve different communities at Te Papa,” said Suzanne.

The group of eight students have spent several months developing the concept, designing the installations, producing innovative marketing material and shaping the activities for the night.

Graphic Design student Celeste Holmes says it’s the largest collaboration that Open Lab has put together, with students from fashion, graphics, music and spatial disciplines involved in the event.

“For us, it has been dream project. It’s been a creative journey that we approached as if we were collaborating with Andy Warhol himself. We have taken a fresh approach to all aspects of the event. For example we have created balloon popping stand to publicise the events.

“You use a custom made pink popper to burst the balloon which reveals an invitation to the event. It’s creating considerable interest around campus,” said Celeste.

The students also set up a POP Facebook page which reached 200 likes the day it launched. Their promotional video has received more than 3000 views.

The R18 event includes live music, interactive installations, drag queen performances and celebrity look-a-likes. The live band features musicians from the New Zealand School of Music who will use instruments and computers to set a soundscape of ‘neo-post minimalist future soul’.

The food will also be ‘POP’ themed so expect lollypops, popcorn and popper jacks to be on the list.

“Guests will be able to immerse themselves in a contemporary, digitised expression of Andy Warhol’s studio among quirky guests, playful installations, live music, a photo booth, and fascinating floor talks,” said Celeste.
