Free events at Wellington Central Library in August
There’s plenty on at Wellington Central Library during August – and these events are all free to the public.
Tuesday 6 August, 6.30–7.30pm
Celebrated
Australian writer Isobelle Carmody, author of the
popular Obernewtyn Chronicles and The Kingdom of
The Lost series, will talk about her journey to becoming
an award-winning international author, as well as her
inspiration, methods and experience. Carmody writes adult,
teen and children’s fiction in the fantasy genre. In this
interactive session, she will also answer questions from the
audience.
Wednesday lunchtimes during August,
12.30–1.30pm
History for Lunch will give history
buffs plenty to savour at this lunchtime series on the
social, urban and Māori history of Wellington. The series
features topics as diverse as: how Katherine Mansfield’s
family coped with life and death in the time of cholera
(1890–93); Te Upoko o te Ika in the1840s: a struggle over
power, mana and resources; Radical Wellington: Philip
Josephs, the Freedom Group and the Great Strike of 1913; and
He tohu aroha – the protective role of Māori
cloaks.
Wednesdays until 21 August, 5.30–8pm
Get
gaming at the Winter Gamesfest. Enjoy a round of Wii,
challenge your mates to a PlayStation tournament or have a
go at classic board games or cards.
All these events are on at Wellington Central Library, 65 Victoria Street. There’s no need to book – just turn up.
