Popular carvings get sure footing

Two carved totara pou in the Te Marae O Hine area of The Square are to be braced.

The pou, known as ‘Hopwood’ and ‘Rongo-Marae-Roa’ were originally installed in The Square in 1990. They were part of a series of nine pouwhenua commissioned by Council in association with the Rangitāne Maori Committee. They were designed and created by the late John Bevan Ford.

“The pou were assessed by a structural engineer to be sound and in no danger of falling,” Jeff Baker leisure assets planner said. “As they are situated in a public space we’ve decided to take precautions and brace them in case we get a large earthquake centred nearby.”

The bracing will take the form of galvanised steel brackets fixed to the foot of both carvings.

The work will be carried out this week.
