Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum celebrates turning 20

Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum celebrates turning 20

This August, Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum celebrates its 20th birthday. Come rain or shine, seven days a week, the museum on Auckland’s glorious Waitemata Harbour has flung open its doors to visitors from near and far.

The actual birthday is Monday 19 August. However, to celebrate and pay homage to this significant milestone Voyager is planning on partying with the public – both on and off the water – for the weekend prior, that is Saturday and Sunday 17, 18 August.

On a more serious note and of real and tangible relevance to the enduring success of Voyager the staff, the Volunteers and some Friends of the Museum have compiled ‘20 Treasures: 20 Years’ trail which traverses all the galleries. For the past two decades it has been fundamental to the museum’s vision to preserve and share New Zealand’s rich maritime heritage. It is in this tradition and by way of celebration that these 20 treasured Taonga have been chosen from the museum’s collection. Each has a significant role in our maritime history, pays tribute to NZ’s pioneering spirit and has its own intriguing story to tell. Voyager is privileged to share these treasures, which encapsulate NZ’s extraordinary love affair with the sea. A brochure will accompany the trail, the story of each treasure will be alongside them and there will be guides along the way to discuss the treasures with you.

Meanwhile on the water the scow Ted Ashby – also turning 20 – will be sailing at 12 noon and 2.00pm each day. An opportunity not to be missed as a deal of two for the price of one is on offer. Voyager’s so elegant Tall Ship, the Brigantine Breeze will be sailing – Saturday and Sunday - at 1.00pm. NZ’s smallest and cutest steam tug SS Puke will be puffing up a head of steam at 11.00am to 4.00pm both days. The marina is to be even further enhanced by the presence of three other vintage and equally picturesque steam boats – Zeltic, Victoria and Kapanui - that will be on display. Still on the steam theme the steam heads from the Steam Engine Society will boast a display of models.

On the Sunday at 1.30pm, as part of the ongoing Landmark Series, Voyager is honoured to host award winning and acclaimed Documentary Film Maker Peter Young. He will be discussing his work including his well known TV series ‘Coasters’ and ‘The Last Ocean’.

Join in the fun and celebrate this major occasion.
