Eight Medals for Local Photographer at National Awards

Cromwell photographer Janyne Fletcher has won eight medals at the prestigious National Iris Photography Awards held in Auckland on 5 August. Ms Fletcher received five bronze medals, two silver medals and a coveted silver distinction medal at these awards. Through her success at the awards, she has also earned enough honours points to be admitted as an Associate of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP).

“I feel like all of my hard work paid off this year and I achieved my best ever result at the Awards. The standard of work submitted for these awards is very high and it can be intimidating even just to enter! This year I challenged my ideas on landscape photography and how I viewed Central Otago. Through the award entry process, I have learnt so much about the technical and creative aspects of photography. Being part of the Iris awards and the working with the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography is a vital part of my professional learning and development” said Ms Fletcher.

Included in the award winning portfolio were photographs from around Otago with a particular emphasis on the Maniototo. Images ranged from stunning landscapes through to more illustrative style images that tell stories and provoke further thought from the viewer.

The Epson/New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP) Awards attract hundreds of entries from around the country and overseas each year. The awards are highly contested and coveted as they have helped launch and establish many careers. All the entries are judged anonymously over three days by a panel of judges who include some of the most qualified and renowned local and international photographers.

“The Iris Awards are an important platform for showcasing the outstanding talent of NZ professional photographers. The awards give photographers an opportunity to push the boundaries, and to see how their work is judged against the rest of the industry,” said NZIPP President Mike Langford. “As a result, the bar keeps getting raised higher and higher and this year was no exception.”
