EXPLORING THE HUMAN ACT OF DISPLACEMENT

Show Pony presents
CARNIVAL HOUND
By Maria Dabrowska

Exploring the isolated world experienced by displaced people, critically acclaimed contemporary dance theatre work Carnival Hound makes it’s long awaited debut in Auckland on the 12th and 13th of October, as part of the Tempo Dance Festival 2013.

“A rare find, this raw production is a definite must see… a contemporary dance/theatre work at its best.”
Theatreview

Revolving around a lone man who is captivated by his haunting visions of women, war and sex, the character is unable to decipher his dream world from his past reality and attempts to manipulate his passage to freedom through a surreal and metaphorical landscape. Carnival Hound offers up depth of character, drama and a playful sensibility.

Choreographed by Maria Dabrowska, created with director Jo Randerson, dancers Mariana Rinaldi, Alex Leonhartsberger, and composer Eden Mulholland, Carnival Hound looks at the distorted realities and power struggle between two women and a man, communicating through puppetry, an abundance of mannequins and body parts, outstanding lighting and original music.

In making the work, Maria was initially inspired by her Polish refugee mother’s experiences. World War Two brought her parents together. Both were displaced from wartime Europe and settled in New Zealand, her mother having been smuggled from Poland to Siberia in the back of a cattle truck.

I found a real connection with that story and I find myself thinking a lot about my mother. I always wanted to make a work about her,” says Dabrowska. "There is darkness but lots of quite funny moments too. It's about being able to laugh at the slightly uncomfortable things in life, which Jo [Randerson] is quite good at."

Dark, funny, beautiful, at times breathtakingly intimate, Carnival Hound premiered in Wellington in 2009 and has since toured to Christchurch and Nelson. It now heads to Auckland for the first time as part of the Tempo Dance Festival

“A roller coaster for the senses…as the lights come up and we all release the body tension and breath we find we are holding we know we have been part of something very personal.”
