Holder Doesn’t Like It Rough

It was a challenging event for Mt Maunganui based rally driver David Holder at last weekend’s Possum Bourne Memorial rally. The rough Maramarua forestry proved to live up to expectations, providing plenty of thrills and challenges for the Holder Brothers Racing team who eventually claimed third place for their efforts.

“We started the day well, posting some solid times through the first group of stages. However on arrival at the first service, we noticed the rough nature of the roads had taken their toll on the car already, with a front brake line compromised and leaking. From there we made the conscious decision to take it a bit easier on the car, and settled in to learn as much as we could.” states Holder.

As the day unfolded Holder’s car struggled to keep in touch with the newer R2 specification Fiesta’s, slowly drifting further behind the two front runners Campbell and Marston, who were both pushing hard for the win.

“Our debut on tarmac was a little bit of a love, hate relationship. On one hand we really enjoyed the public road tarmac stage, but at the same time it was difficult to adapt driving style from the previous gravel stages. All in all though we were happy with our performance and the experience we gained on tarmac,” said Holder.

The team, happy to have more experience in their tool box, now looks forward to Rally Wairarapa to be held on the 5th October which is also the final round of the New Zealand Rally Championship. Although the Holder Brothers team are no longer in a championship winning position, they plan to show up prepared for a final battle.

“Our main aim for this season was always to gain as much experience as possible. We would have preferred to do that without the big crash at Whangarei, but that’s the nature of rallying, especially when you’re learning at this level” exclaimed Holder.

“Winning at Wairarapa won’t make too much of a difference for our championship position unfortunately, but our competition in the R2 fiesta’s will be giving it everything down there so it’s only fair we do the same. We plan to give it our absolute best” states Holder.
