Gold medal winning NZU21 and Southern Steel Coach Janine Southby will lead the side for the first time.
Southby is part of Netball New Zealand’s High Performance Coaching Programme and her appointment as FAST5 Ferns Head Coach will add yet another string to her already long bow.
NNZ High Performance Director Lynette Grace says this a great opportunity for Southby to have another great experience on the international netball stage.
“Janine’s results over the past 12 months with the teams she has worked with has been outstanding and we feel she more than deserves this opportunity,” Grace said.
Southby says is excited about coaching the new form of the game and is determined to grasp the opportunity with both hands.
“Who didn’t love the FAST5 last year? What an exciting tournament and I’m really thrilled to have been asked to coach FAST5 Ferns side,” Southby said.
“It’s a really fast-paced game and a tough physical challenge for the team, so it’s a good way to end their international season with a bang.”
“Plus, they’re defending champions, no pressure!”
Six teams will compete for the Fast5 title with England, South Africa, Australia, Malawi and Jamaica competing alongside the Fast5 Ferns.
Southby says she is looking forward to giving the FAST5 Ferns the best possible chance of winning back to back titles.
“I’m not going to give away all of my ideas, but let’s just say I know some of the team pretty well and we’ve definitely got the skills to win the title again,” she said.
The FAST5 Netball World Series is from November 8-10 at Vector Arena in Auckland. Tickets available through Ticketmaster.
